Workshop – Re-Envisioning Digital Scholarship with Scalar (Maria Alberto, DM Graduate Fellow, Dept. of English)

October 2, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Digital publishing, e-publishing, open-access publishing. . . If you are a scholar or researcher, then chances are good that you’ve encountered these terms before. Probably in all their crossover and uncertainty, too! It can be challenging to figure out what digital publishing entails, how it benefits scholarly work, or where to even get started. But despite these difficulties, digital publishing has become an important way of making ideas more accessible, so it deserves consideration.

Scalar is an open-source authoring platform built to support long-form, multi-media scholarship. Scalar enables authors to integrate their own writing alongside content from a variety of academic and popular sources, all without the need to learn a new coding language or to pay for hosting content. As a tool, Scalar also encourages users to consider the accessibility and sustainability of digital content, particularly for academic work.

This workshop will be a hands-on introduction to Scalar, so attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet capable of Internet access. (Both types of device are available to check out from the Knowledge Commons). Previous experience with Scalar is not required.
